AB: Nutritional composition data are presented for 24 indigenous plant specimens,
representing 16 species, collected in May-November, 1993, in southern Burkina
Faso within a 60 km radius of Zabre and covering the provinces of Boulgou and
Nahouri. The total protein, amino acid, total lipid, fatty acid and mineral
contents of specimens are tabulated. Plants are noted which contained high levels
of protein, linoleic and alpha-linoleic acid, Fe, Zn and Ca. The role that these
plants currently play and the potential for further use in supplementing existing
staple crops in western Sahel populations is discussed.
