AB: The alcoholic extracts of 34 species, including many used in the Kano region
to treat microbial diseases, were tested for in vitro activity against 13 indicator
organisms (human and plant pathogens) and for the presence of alkaloids. The results
are tabulated and discussed; 30 of the species showed antimicrobial activity and
19 of these contained alkaloids. Eight species showed antifungal activity. Leptadenia
hastata, Cassia occidentalis, Adansonia digitata, Syzigium [Syzygium] guineense
and Striga hermonthica were both antibacterial and antifungal.
